20 Destination Wineries in the Okanagan Valley
Like Vibrant Vine in Kelowna, Dirty Laundry is a relatively small winery that goes above and beyond to offer one of the best visitor experiences in the Okanagan.
get into the tasting room, one brushes by skimpy bras and frilly corsets hung on a clothesline on the expansive patio. At the tasting room counter the guys blush and the girls giggle as the staff tell ribald jokes or recount the slightly … soiled … history of Summerland’s dirty secret.
Dirty Laundry was named after a little known icon of the town’s early pioneer history. It’s said in the late 1800’s a Chinese labourer baled out on the railway gangs building the CP Rail line across Canada, and started a laundry in Lower Summerland. As one of the staff put it, “He found out the hard way the early pioneers weren’t that concerned with clean laundry, so he had to … ah … supplement his business.
That supplement was a gambling den and brothel on the top floor, with the result locals gave the place the name ‘Dirty Laundry’.
Now, the winery has added to its X-rated attractions with a much more expansive patio, where you can drink in the fabulous views over vineyards, the old Kettle Valley Railway bridge, and Okanagan Lake. We went there right after the season opening (2014) and have to say Dirty Laundry now has one of the best places for a glass of wine in the valley.
